I said before, that a crowd can be violent. But mostly they aren't! That's proven by this photograph, taken by earther, at the North Carolina State Fair. This crowd is beautiful. They are surrounded by rides and places for selling hot dogs, but everybody is calm. They are smiling and moving around each other in a simple way. I like how you can see individuals in front, and they are just tiny spots in back. Plus, there are people in the air too! This crowd takes up all the spaces it can.

This is a small crowd, but very packed. A packed crowd has the same properties a very large one, I think. We've all seen this one before. It's rush hour on the subway! In this case, it's Seoul, Korea. But it could be anywhere! Photo by jasonunbound.

I don't mind saying, that I don't like this crowd. It's a riot in Hungary outside a TV station, and you can see one of the problems of crowds very easily. In the darkness, they aren't always peaceful. People may yell, and they may cause property damage! Especially when there are a lot of people. I think a crowd should be an ornament, as I said earlier, but I have a sad feeling that sometimes this makes it easier to be violent. But mostly, crowds aren't like that! Veszig took this picture.
I think this crowd is the most natural one I've seen. First of all, everybody looks small so it seems like the right thing for them to be there. Even more, the trees in the background are real nature, and they flow into the people. I'm not sure why the person on the left is standing above everybody else. That's the only unnatural part of this crowd, because he sticks out and faces the wrong way. This photo is by Beatrice Murch.

A herd is like a crowd, except it's animals not people. I think there are some similarities and differences between herds and crowds. For one thing, a herd is usually smaller. Also, you can't expect a herd to do things like a coordinated cheer or waiting in line, the way a crowd of people does! I like this picture of a herd, taken by orbit_77, because there are a lot of bison kicking up dust. They almost seem like people at a dance club, with some at the "watering hole" and some on the dance floor!

I've been thinking about what makes a crowd fun to look at. Some people might say moving all together. Or maybe it would be like dancing the way they did in those old movies with swimming pools full of girls in formation. Doing that sort of turns a whole bunch of people into one big Christmas ornament or something! I think you can see that here, with all the red t-shirts at a college game.
I like this crowd because the light makes everybody look very symmetrical. This is a true crowd, where everybody blends with everybody.
I'm not sure where this crowd is, but I like how the flags look so festive.
Sometimes, a crowd is really just a super big line! Here is a bunch of people waiting for a ferry in China!
